When the TC-20E III is used with slow f/4 aperture lenses, autofocus stops working completely or becomes extremely unreliable. With the exception of the new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II, zoom lenses also start acting up in daylight with very mixed results. The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II works surprisingly well with the TC-20E III and I found

The Nikkor Z 180-600mm F5.6-6.3 VR is the spiritual successor to Nikon's F-mount 200-500mm F5.6 lens. Its optical formula includes 25 elements in 17 groups, including six ED glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration. All that glass means it's a relatively hefty lens, coming in at 1955g (4.3 lbs), or 2140 (4.7lbs) with the supplied tripod foot. These are used to block strong light sources, such as the sun, from the lens to prevent glare and lens flare. Lens hood is reversible. Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 DG OS HSM | S. At f/5.6 and larger the aperture remains quite circular, instead of polygonal. In spite of all the plastic, this is the biggest and heaviest AF 80-200 f/2.8 AF ever from Nikon. It's 3.4" (88mm) around by 8.15" (207mm) long. The huge included bayonet hood is 4-5/8" diameter.
While the Nikkor 500mm f/4G VR is a noticeably sharper lens wide open, the Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR shows remarkably good results when stopped down at f/5.6, practically matching the performance of the 500mm lens. So if you shoot with both lenses wide open, the 500mm f/4G ED VR is a better candidate.
